CHARLES STICKNEY SCHOLARSHIP

Charles Stickney

Charles “Stick” Stickney was a founding member and plankowner of the Casco Bay Council of the Navy Leage of the United States. He was the Council’s first president and served from 1967 to 1969. He joined the Navy in 1943 and became a Naval Aviator, flying torpedo bombers. Firmly cementing his lifelong love of the Navy. He joined the Navy Reserve in 1951. Rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. In retirement, he was legendary in shi support of the Blue Angels, hosting clambakes fo the Blue Angels and hundreds of guests every time they visited Maine for the Great State of Maine Air Show.

Following his death in 2001 at the age of 89, the Casco Bay Council created the Charles Stickney Scholarship Fund in his memory. Scholarships up to $300 will be awarded to deserving Cadets in the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps and the Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps programs to partially fund USNSCC and NJROTC local, regional, or national training opportunities.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for a scholarship, applicants must be;

  • An active member of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps OR
  • An active member of the Navy Junior ROTC program.

Be sure to include a Statement of Endorsement from your Commanding Officer, as well as a short essay (1 page, double-spaced) describing your personal goals and how the proposed training will help you meet those goals.

Note: The Council Board of Directors will consider completed applications on a rolling basis throughout the year.

Scholarship Expectations

Applicants who receive a Stickney Scholarship will be expected to attend a future Casco Bay Navy League Council dinner meeting to present a brief overview of the training experience. Discuss how the training helped to meet the recipient’s goals and share how the USNSCC or NJROTC program has made a difference in their lives.
